A.L. McMichael is a historian of art, architecture, and design. In praxis she specializes in designed systems and administration. Her current role is Director of the Lab for Education and Advancement in Digital Research (LEADR) at Michigan State University. There she and her team construct pedagogical experiences and teach digital research methods in History and Anthropology. Her previous work was in editorial art direction with a focus on visual experience in publication design.

Alice Lynn’s academic research on design turns a rhetorical lens on historical communities of practice. She examines space and place in the medieval built environment and landscape. Her current project argues that applying concepts of interface and user experience to monumental Byzantine imagery illuminates the multisensory viewing contexts embedded in these works. Her digital humanities research is at the intersection of visual studies and digital archaeology, using 3D modeling and Virtual Reality to explore the visuality of the past.

She holds a PhD in Early Christian and Byzantine Art and Architecture from The Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY), an MA in Art History from Brooklyn College, and a BFA in Graphic Design from Auburn University. She has taught history, art history, and digital humanities at Hunter College, Montclair State University, City College of New York, and Baruch College. She also collaborated with the College Art Association and Society of Architectural Historians to develop disciplinary guidelines for evaluating digital scholarship for promotion and tenure.
